Your Four Pillars: Reading the Full Chart
Learn the 10 Gods system — how every element in your chart relates to your Day Master — and understand chart strength.
The 10 Gods: The Heart of Ba Zi Analysis
The 10 Gods (十神, Shí Shén) system is the analytical engine of Ba Zi. It describes exactly how every other element in your chart relates to your Day Master — and therefore what role it plays in your life.
Every stem or branch element has one of 10 possible relationships with your Day Master, determined by two factors:
1. Whether the element generates, controls, is generated by, or is controlled by your Day Master (or is the same)
2. Whether the polarity is the same or different

Example: Reading a 壬水 (Yang Water) Day Master
Let's say your chart contains the stem 甲 (Yang Wood).
For a 壬水 Day Master:
- ◆Water produces Wood → 甲 Wood is your OUTPUT
- ◆甲 and 壬 are both Yang polarity → Same polarity
- ◆Therefore: 甲木 is your Eating God (食神)
This tells you: natural talent, ease of expression, enjoyment, and children (if female) are prominent themes in your chart wherever 甲木 appears.
Strong vs Weak Day Master
This is the most important preliminary assessment in Ba Zi:
A STRONG Day Master has:
- ◆Many Friend/Rob Wealth stars in the chart (same element)
- ◆Strong Resource stars supporting it
- ◆Born in its favorable season (e.g., Water Day Master born in Winter)
- ◆Root in the branches (Day Branch or other branches support the Day Master)
A Strong Day Master can handle and benefit from:
- ◆Wealth stars (it's strong enough to manage wealth)
- ◆Officer/Seven Killings stars (it can handle pressure and authority)
- ◆Output stars (it has surplus energy to express)
A WEAK Day Master has:
- ◆Few supporting elements
- ◆Excessive controlling or draining elements
- ◆Born in its unfavorable season
- ◆Little root in the branches
A Weak Day Master needs:
- ◆Resource stars (for support and nourishment)
- ◆Friend stars (for peer support)
- ◆Fewer Wealth and Officer stars (which drain an already weak master)
Reading a Sample Chart Step by Step
Sample: Yang Water (壬) Day Master
Chart elements present: Year Branch 子(Water), Month Stem 甲(Wood), Month Branch 寅(Wood), Hour Stem 庚(Metal), Hour Branch 申(Metal)
Step 1: Identify Day Master — 壬水 (Yang Water)
Step 2: Assess support — 子水 (more Water) = Friend Star (比肩). 庚金 produces Water = Indirect Resource (偏印). 申金 produces Water = Indirect Resource in Branch.
Step 3: Assess drains — 甲木 and 寅木 are Water's output = Eating God (食神) × 2.
Step 4: Determine strength — Two Resource stars providing support, no controlling elements (no Earth). Moderate-to-strong chart.
Step 5: Identify key stars — Strong Eating God suggests: natural creative or intellectual talent, ease of expression, potential for children (for women), risk of over-relying on talent without discipline.
The complete picture: A Water Day Master with natural intellectual talent (Wood output), strong intuitive backing (Metal resources), and social/peer energy. The ideal path: fields requiring intelligence and communication, with discipline to channel the natural talent (Earth element would help as the missing anchor).
- ◆The 10 Gods describe exactly how each element in your chart affects your Day Master
- ◆Wealth Stars are the elements your Day Master controls — Direct Wealth (正財) and Indirect Wealth (偏財)
- ◆Officer Stars are elements that control your Day Master — showing career and authority
- ◆A strong Day Master benefits from Wealth and Officer; a weak Day Master needs Resource and Friend
- ◆Chart balance matters more than any single strong star
