What Is Liu Nian?

Liu Nian (流年, liú nián) — "flowing year" — is the annual timing layer in Ba Zidestiny analysis. Each year in the Chinese lunisolar calendar is governed by a Ganzhi pair: one Heavenly Stem (天干, tiān gān) and one Earthly Branch (地支, dì zhī). This pair rotates through the 60-year Ganzhi cycle, creating a new elemental character for each year.

The Liu Nian changes with the Lunar New Year (農曆新年, nóng lì xīn nián), which falls in late January or early February in the Western calendar. Strictly speaking, the new annual Qi begins with the solar term Lǐ Chūn (立春, "Start of Spring"), which occurs around February 4th each year.

The golden rule: Never read a Liu Nian without knowing the current Da Yun. A 乙巳 year that would be excellent for a particular Day Master in isolation may be moderated or amplified depending on the Da Yun backdrop. Specifically:

Notice that every 12 years you encounter the same Branch year again — now filtered through your current Da Yun. The Snake year at age 22 feels entirely different from the Snake year at age 34 or 46, because you are in a different Da Yun each time.
