What Are Transits?

Your natal chart is fixed — a snapshot of the sky at your birth. But the planets keep moving. When a planet in the current sky makes an exact aspect to one of your natal planets, a transit occurs — and the natal energy is activated.

Transits are the primary timing mechanism in Western astrology. They describe WHEN the potentials encoded in your natal chart will manifest — periods of opportunity, challenge, transformation, and change.

The Hierarchy of Transits

Outer Planet Transits — Major Life Chapters (months to years)

Pluto transits (conjunct, square, or opposite a natal planet) last 1–3 years due to retrograde motion. They describe irreversible transformation — things that will never be the same afterward. Pluto transiting your natal Sun rewrites your identity. Pluto crossing your Ascendant marks a complete life reinvention.

Neptune transits (1–2 years per pass) dissolve, idealize, and spiritualize. Neptune conjunct your natal Saturn dissolves structures you thought permanent. Neptune transiting your 7th house can bring spiritual or confusing partnerships.

Uranus transits (~1 year per pass) bring sudden change, liberation, and disruption. Uranus opposite natal Sun is often associated with life reinvention in the mid-30s. Uranus square natal Moon disrupts emotional patterns that need updating.

Saturn transits (1–2 years per pass) bring structure, discipline, and karmic testing. Saturn conjunct natal Venus tests relationships — those built on authentic foundations deepen; those built on illusion collapse. Saturn crossing your Midheaven marks a career accountability peak.

Jupiter transits (a few months per planet) bring expansion, opportunity, and luck. Jupiter conjunct natal Venus = financial and romantic expansion. Jupiter through your 10th house = career opportunity peak.

Inner Planet Transits — Day-to-Day Variations

Mars transits (days to weeks) activate and energize. Mars conjunct your natal Mercury = intense, combative communication days. Mars transiting your 12th house = background tension and fatigue.

Sun transits (1–2 days) give a brief but clear activation. The Sun transiting your natal Jupiter = a day of heightened confidence and opportunity.

Moon transits (hours per aspect) describe the emotional texture of each day. The Moon crossing your natal Saturn = emotional heaviness and self-criticism. The Moon crossing your natal Venus = warmth, aesthetic pleasure, relational ease.

Reading Your Transits

The most productive way to use transits:

1. Identify the natal planet being transited. What does that planet mean in your chart? Its natal house, sign, and aspects tell you what is being activated.

2. Identify the transiting planet. What energy is doing the activating? Jupiter = expansion; Saturn = testing; Pluto = transformation.

3. Note the aspect type. Conjunction (full activation), trine (easy flow), square (friction and challenge), opposition (external confrontation).

4. Check duration. How long will the transit be in orb? A 3-year Pluto transit demands different preparation than a 2-day Mars transit.
