Advanced Chart Reading: Special Stars & Combinations
Master the special stars, Branch combinations, and advanced patterns that separate basic Ba Zi reading from genuine mastery.
Beyond the 10 Gods: The Special Stars
While the 10 Gods system is the analytical backbone of Ba Zi, advanced reading also uses a system of Special Stars (神煞, Shén Shà) that are calculated from specific combinations within the chart. Here are the most important:
天乙貴人 (Tiān Yǐ Guì Rén) — Heavenly Noble Star
Calculation: Based on Day Master's stem. Find which Branches are your Noble Stars:
- ◆甲/戊 Day Master: Noble in 丑 and 未
- ◆乙/己 Day Master: Noble in 子 and 申
- ◆丙/丁 Day Master: Noble in 亥 and 酉
- ◆庚 Day Master: Noble in 丑 and 未
- ◆辛 Day Master: Noble in 午 and 寅
- ◆壬/癸 Day Master: Noble in 卯 and 巳
What it means: When the Heavenly Noble Branch appears in your chart, it indicates: access to helpful mentors, protection in times of danger, rescue from difficult situations through the assistance of others. People with multiple Noble Stars in their chart often have extraordinary access to assistance that others find remarkable.
驛馬 (Yì Mǎ) — Travelling Horse Star
Calculation: Based on your Year or Day Branch:
- ◆Branches 申/子/辰 (Monkey, Rat, Dragon): Travelling Horse is 寅 (Tiger)
- ◆Branches 亥/卯/未 (Pig, Rabbit, Goat): Travelling Horse is 巳 (Snake)
- ◆Branches 寅/午/戌 (Tiger, Horse, Dog): Travelling Horse is 申 (Monkey)
- ◆Branches 巳/酉/丑 (Snake, Rooster, Ox): Travelling Horse is 亥 (Pig)
What it means: When the Travelling Horse appears in your chart — especially in the Month or Hour Pillar — it indicates constant movement, frequent travel, changes of residence, dynamic career involving mobility. The person rarely stays in one place. When the Travelling Horse gets "combined" (harmonized by a Six Harmony partner), the movement settles. When it gets "clashed," sudden travel or relocation is triggered.
桃花 (Táo Huā) — Peach Blossom / Romantic Star
Calculation: Also based on Year or Day Branch, same groups as Travelling Horse:
- ◆Group 申/子/辰: Peach Blossom at 酉 (Rooster)
- ◆Group 亥/卯/未: Peach Blossom at 子 (Rat)
- ◆Group 寅/午/戌: Peach Blossom at 卯 (Rabbit)
- ◆Group 巳/酉/丑: Peach Blossom at 午 (Horse)
What it means: The Peach Blossom represents romance, attractiveness, charm, and social magnetism. When present in the chart:
- ◆In the Month Pillar: Natural social charisma, career benefiting from attractiveness
- ◆In the Hour Pillar: Hidden romantic nature, affairs possible in later life
- ◆When Peach Blossom aligns with Wealth Star: Career in beauty, entertainment, or social networking
- ◆In excess (multiple): High romantic energy but instability in relationships; possible scandals
Branch Combination Patterns
三合 (Sān Hé) — Three Harmonies: Powerful Elemental Combination
Three specific Branches together form a powerful combined element:
| Three Branches | Combined Element |
|---|---|
| 申+子+辰 | Water (Water Frame) |
| 亥+卯+未 | Wood (Wood Frame) |
| 寅+午+戌 | Fire (Fire Frame) |
| 巳+酉+丑 | Metal (Metal Frame) |
When all three branches of a frame appear in a chart, that element becomes extremely strong — often stronger than what appears in the Stems alone. This is why you can't read a chart only from the Stems; the Branches contain hidden power.
三刑 (Sān Xíng) — Three Penalties
Unlike the harmonious Three Harmonies, the Three Penalties create friction, tension, and challenges:
- ◆刑 Group 1: 寅+巳+申 — Tiger, Snake, Monkey — Mutual destruction. These three together create aggressive friction, potential legal issues, or aggressive competition.
- ◆刑 Group 2: 丑+戌+未 — Ox, Dog, Goat — Unkindness penalty. These create a more subtle but persistent strain, often manifesting as self-harm tendencies, difficulty receiving help.
- ◆自刑 (Self-Penalty): 子+子, 午+午, 酉+酉, 辰+辰 — When the same Branch appears twice, it creates a self-penalty: the person turns their own energy against themselves.
Stem Combinations (天干合, Tiān Gān Hé)
When two specific Heavenly Stems appear in adjacent pillars (Year+Month, Month+Day, or Day+Hour), they combine and may transform into a new element:
| Combination | Transforms To |
|---|---|
| 甲 + 己 | Earth |
| 乙 + 庚 | Metal |
| 丙 + 辛 | Water |
| 丁 + 壬 | Wood |
| 戊 + 癸 | Fire |
The critical question: Does the combination actually transform? Only if the combined element is supported by the chart environment. If the season or other elements in the chart support the transformed element, the transformation is real. If not, the stems are "attracted" to each other (合而不化 — combined but not transformed) — they still interact but don't fully merge.
Practical implication: If your Day Master stem combines with another stem in an adjacent pillar, your Day Master is "occupied" or "attracted" — making it less available for the functions it normally performs. This can weaken the Day Master's effectiveness in the area where the combined stem sits.
Reading a Complex Chart: Putting It All Together
Advanced Ba Zi reading requires holding all of this simultaneously:
1. Day Master identity and strength
2. 10 Gods and what they represent
3. Branch interactions (Harmonies, Clashes, Combinations, Penalties)
4. Stem Combinations
5. Special Stars
6. Da Yun and Liu Nian running cycles
The OraDao Oracle synthesizes all of this automatically for your exact chart, then adds the Western natal chart layer for the complete picture →
- ◆Special stars like 天乙貴人 (Heavenly Noble Star) indicate points of extraordinary support and protection in the chart
- ◆The "Three Harmonies" (三合) and "Three Penalties" (三刑) are powerful Branch combinations that amplify or create tension
- ◆The Peach Blossom Star (桃花) reveals romance, charm, and potential for scandals
- ◆Specific stem combinations (天干合, Stem Combinations) transform elements and change 10 God interpretations
- ◆A chart with too many special stars and transformations requires extra care — the more active the chart, the more volatile the life
