Ba Zi Compatibility: How Charts Interact

Beyond Zodiac Animals

The popular Chinese zodiac compatibility charts (Tiger and Pig are compatible, etc.) are a gross oversimplification of Ba Zi compatibility analysis. They use only the Year Branch — one of eight characters — and ignore the other seven.

True Ba Zi compatibility analyzes:

1. How the two Day Masters relate to each other

2. How the Branches interact (especially Day Branches — the Spouse Palaces)

3. Whether each person's chart strengthens or weakens the other's Day Master

4. The timing of their meeting (which Da Yun and Liu Nian)

The Day Branch Interaction: Most Critical Factor

The Day Branch is the Spouse Palace. When two people's Day Branches interact powerfully, the relationship connection is deep and often fated.

The Six Harmonies (六合, Liù Hé): Magnetic Attraction

These pairs of Branches combine to create new elemental energy:

When your Day Branch and your partner's Day Branch form a Six Harmony: there is often a sense of inexplicable rightness, ease in the relationship, and natural compatibility.

The Six Clashes (六冲, Liù Chōng): Friction and Change

These pairs of Branches clash when they meet — creating either productive tension or destructive conflict, depending on chart context:

Important: Clashing Day Branches do NOT automatically mean bad relationships. They mean: the relationship will involve significant change, challenge, and transformation. Some of the most powerful and transformative partnerships involve Day Branch clashes. The question is whether both people have the chart strength to handle the friction productively.

Day Master Relationships

How the two Day Masters relate to each other creates the basic elemental dynamic:

Same Day Master (e.g., both 壬水): Mirror relationship. Deep understanding of each other's nature. Potential: mutual support, camaraderie. Challenge: compete for the same resources, same blind spots.

Generating Relationship (e.g., Wood + Fire): One person naturally nourishes the other. The nourishing person gives energy; the nourished person receives it. Positive when both understand the asymmetry and neither resents it.

Controlling Relationship (e.g., Water + Fire): One person's nature challenges the other's. Can be magnetic (opposites attract) or exhausting (constant friction). Whether positive or negative depends on chart strength — a weak Day Master in a controlling relationship feels drained; a strong one feels stimulated.

Mutual Strengthening: The Ideal Pattern

The most favorable compatibility pattern is when each person's chart brings elements that strengthen the other's Day Master without overpowering it.

Example: 甲木 (Yang Wood) Day Master + 壬水 (Yang Water) Day Master

• ◆壬水 produces 甲木 (Water feeds Wood) → The Water person naturally supports and nourishes the Wood person

• ◆甲木 produces 丙/丁火 (Wood's output) → The Wood person's accomplishments create warmth and success that benefits the relationship

• ◆The 壬水 person may feel they give more; the 甲木 person may receive more support

This isn't necessarily unequal — if the Wood person's success and expression (their output) creates something the Water person values, the exchange can be beautiful.

Timing for Marriage

Ba Zi can identify when marriage is most likely in a person's chart:

1. Officer Star enters the chart (in Da Yun or Liu Nian): For women, a year when 正官 or 七殺 energy arrives strongly often coincides with meeting a significant partner.

2. Wealth Star arrives strongly (for men): The year when Wealth energy is strongest often brings both financial activation AND relationship opportunity.

3. Day Branch gets "combined": When a running cycle brings the Branch that harmonizes with your Day Branch (see Six Harmonies), relationship events often occur.

4. Clash to the Day Branch: Sometimes a clash year triggers a relationship change — meeting someone, deepening a relationship, or relationship disruption.
